Portage Lake Campground
About this site
Portage Lake Campground is part of Waterloo Recreation Area and is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The modern campground sits on a hill above Portage Lake and accommodates RVs, tents, and walk-in campers through multiple access options. Most campsites feature paved pads with adjacent grass areas for tent setup. The campground operates two bathroom facilities within the loop plus an additional restroom at the beach area. Portage Lake provides the main recreational draw with a sandy beach, fishing pier equipped with benches and tables, and boat rentals available on-site. A handicap-accessible vista walkway connects the campground directly to the beach and concession area. The lake supports swimming and various water activities. A disc golf course operates within the recreation area, and the Waterloo-Pickney trail system offers hiking opportunities. The campground experiences heavy use during peak season. Sites fill quickly on weekends, making reservations essential for summer stays. Winter camping remains available with limited snow removal to select sites only.
