About this site
This tree-covered backcountry campsite is located within the Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve on Kauai, adjacent to the Waimea River with a view of Poo Kaeha Peak. Access requires a 3-hour hike from the road via the Koaie Canyon Trail, which starts about a half mile up the Waimea River from the bottom of the Kukui Trail. The site is located 1/2 mile upstream from Wiliwili campsite on the east bank of the Waimea River. The trail passes through scenic Koaie Canyon with swimming holes and transitions from Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve into Na Pali-Kona Forest Reserve. The site is equipped with a trail shelter and composting toilet. A free backcountry permit is required from the park's visitor center. WARNING: Do not attempt to access this campsite during stormy weather or heavy rain in the mountains, as these conditions can lead to flash flooding and hazardous stream crossings.
