Hardwood Campsite
About this site
Grand Island is a Congressionally designated National Recreation Area (NRA) with a fascinating history, breathtaking overlooks, pristine sandy beaches, dense hardwood forest, serene inland lakes, and miles of hiking and biking trails. This is a secluded and exciting destination to spend a day or longer biking, hiking, exploring, or just hanging out and recharging. Visitors get to the island via passenger ferry or rented/personal non-motorized watercraft. We have 21 designated campsites, including 19 single-family and 2 group sites to support up to 25 people available. Reservations are required from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, except for Cobble Cove, Flat Rock, and Muskrat Point, which are first-come/first-served. All reservations must be made through Recreation.gov and can be made up to, and including, the day of arrival. Most campsites are equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, vault or wilderness toilets, and bear poles or lockers. Drinking water is available at locations at or near most sites on the south end of the island. Northern sites will need water carried in or treated from natural sources. Camping is prohibited at any of the day-use sites. The Hardwood campsite is located on the south-western side of Grand Island near Waterfall Beach and is approximately 3.5 miles from William's Landing. The site can be accessed either by bicycle or hiking trail from Williams Landing, or by water - kayakers access this site via Waterfall Beach. Leave your kayak on the beach, climb the stairs to the trail, and hike approximately 100 yards north to the campsite. This site can accommodate up to 6 people with no more than two tents. A primitive latrine, food storage pole, fire ring, benches and firewood are provided in/near the campsite. The nearest potable water is approximately 0.5 mile south of the campsite at Juniper Flats.
