Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Primitive Camping
About this site
Two primitive campsites sit nestled above the ocean near McWay Falls in Big Sur. These sites are extremely popular and are often booked six months in advance. You will park on the ocean side of Highway 1, walk past a gate marked “Environmental Campsites,” and take a short hike down a fire road to access the sites. Fire pits and picnic tables are available at each site, and pit toilets are a short walk away. Be sure to bring fresh water—none is available at the sites. Water can be filled a short drive away at the McWay Waterfalls trailhead. On Google Maps, the campsites are labeled as “Saddle Rock and South Gardens Environmental Campgrounds.” Stay within the designated area; there are major fines for going past the fences or onto the beach.
