Two primitive roadside campsites located along River Road in Big Bend National Park, 15.6 miles from the west end near Castolon or 38.4 miles from the east end near Rio Grande Village. Johnson Ranch 1 (JR-1) accommodates 2 vehicles, 10 people, and 4 horses. Johnson Ranch 2 (JR-2) accommodates 2 vehicles, 8 people, and 2 horses. Access via 0.3-mile access road; River Road is maintained for high clearance vehicles only and may require 4-wheel drive, especially after rains. No shade, toilets, or other amenities provided. Generators prohibited. Minimal shade available; campsites located in thick, brushy riparian vegetation. A 5-minute walk from JR-2 provides views of the south Chisos, Rio Grande, and Sierra Ponce cliffs in Mexico. Nearby are ruins of the Elmo Johnson Ranch, a trading post, cotton farm, and goat ranch operated until the 1940s. Camping prohibited near ruins. Secure belongings to minimize theft risk.
