Calkins Flat Dispersed Camping Area offers free primitive camping next to the Wild & Scenic Upper Kern River in Sequoia National Forest, about 15 miles north of Kernville. There are 7-10 sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs, with some walk-to options. All camping must be at least 25 feet from the river’s edge. Amenities include vault toilets and seasonal trash collection, but no potable water or tables. Campfire permits are required; campfires may be restricted. Year-round access with activities including rafting, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Additional Info: Operated on a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit within 30 days.
