State Line
About this site
State Line Backcountry Site is one of two oceanside primitive camping areas at Assateague Island National Seashore, positioned at the Maryland-Virginia state boundary. Reaching this remote site requires a 12-mile backpacking journey along the Atlantic beach from the Maryland district, making it ideal for experienced backpackers seeking isolation and pristine coastline. The campsite sits on exposed dunes with no trees or natural shade, offering unobstructed ocean views and excellent opportunities for observing the island's famous wild horses. As a backcountry site, State Line provides only the most basic amenities. Vault toilets are available year-round, but there is no potable water on site. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash. Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Permits must be obtained on the day of departure at the Maryland District Ranger Station or Tom's Cove Visitor Center.
