About this site

Salt House is a dispersed camping area accessed via the Salt House Trail #252 in the Gunnison National Forest near Montrose, Colorado. The trail begins at approximately 11,200 feet and climbs to 11,360 feet on the High Mesa, a long flat open meadow surrounded by Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. Access is via Forest Service Road #858 (Big Cimarron Road) south of Silver Jack Reservoir. Parking is minimal; trucks with horse trailers should use the pull-out 0.25 miles south of the reservoir. The site is popular during big game hunting season. No potable water or restroom facilities are available.
