S Rock Camp 004 is a dispersed camping location situated in the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area, part of the Custer Gallatin National Forest in southwestern Montana. The Wilderness Study Area encompasses rugged terrain in the Gallatin Range and stretches from the upper reaches of Hyalite Canyon toward Yellowstone National Park. This primitive camping site offers a backcountry experience in an area known for its wildlife habitat and diverse recreational opportunities. The Wilderness Study Area allows dispersed camping while maintaining its wild character. Visitors should be prepared for primitive conditions with no developed facilities or services. Access to this dispersed site depends on seasonal conditions, with winter snow typically making the area inaccessible for camping from late fall through late spring. Summer and early fall provide the best conditions for backcountry camping in this high-elevation area of Montana. Additional Info: From Gardiner, MT, travel 17 miles northwest on US Highway 89, then 12 miles southwest on Tom Miner Road. Pets are allowed. No reservations required.
