Holter Lake Campground
About this site
Holter Lake Campground is a 52-site Bureau of Land Management facility situated on the picturesque Holter Lake in west central Montana, approximately 45 miles north of Helena along the Missouri River. The campground offers stunning views of the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area and provides convenient access to the Gates of the Mountains Historic Site via watercraft. The 52-site campground features spacious, level gravel parking pads that accommodate RVs, camper trailers, and tents, with 9 designated tent-only sites. Most campsites can accommodate up to 2 RVs or tents per site. The campground is equipped with a large concrete boat launch with a courtesy dock, as well as day-use and overnight dock slips available on a first-come, first-served basis. The A loop and tent area sites include fire rings with grill grates and picnic tables. Every campsite offers views of the lake and mountains, and the campground features poplar and green ash trees that provide shade during summer. The site is set in a shrub-steppe landscape of sagebrush and bunch grasses, surrounded by sparsely wooded hills. Potable water is available throughout the campground via accessible hydrants with pull-up pumps, and garbage dumpsters are provided. The campground offers excellent opportunities for boating (motorized and non-motorized), fishing, water skiing, hiking, wildlife viewing, bird watching, and scenic photography. All 52 sites are reservation-only through Recreation.gov, though first-come, first-served sites may be available after 2:00 p.m. on a daily basis during operating season. The campground typically operates mid-May through mid-October.
