About this site

Dispersed camping area at the southeastern access point to Cruces Basin Wilderness in Carson National Forest, located at approximately 10,000 feet elevation near the Colorado-New Mexico border. The area features mixed conifer and aspen forests with stunning views. The trailhead marks the beginning of trails into one of Carson's least-visited wilderness areas, situated in a unique bowl formation. Surrounded by 18,902 acres of grass-banked streams, aspen groves, and large open meadows. Rolling hills above 8,600 feet are home to elk, deer, pumas, and other wildlife. Access is via Forest Road 87. Winter access depends on snow conditions; forest roads are not plowed and may be impassable from late fall through early summer due to snowpack. No water, toilets, or showers available. Fires allowed. Pets allowed.
