Box Canyon Campground is nestled along the rim above the Henrys Fork of the Snake River, about 28 miles south of West Yellowstone, Montana, near Island Park, Idaho. Situated within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest’s Ashton/Island Park Ranger District, this campground rests at an elevation of 6,300 feet, accessible via U.S. Highway 20, one mile south of the Island Park Ranger Station. Natural Features: Lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir cloak the canyon’s edge, casting dappled shade over the campsites, while the Henrys Fork glimmers below, renowned for its hefty rainbow trout. Summer breezes carry the scent of conifers through this tranquil riverside retreat. A three-mile trail traces the canyon rim from the campground, offering scenic overlooks for hikers and photographers, with shorter paths dipping down to the river for fishing and exploration. The surrounding forest hums with wildlife, a quiet invitation to unwind in nature’s embrace. Facilities: The campground offers 16 single-family sites and two double-family sites, each equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills. Vault toilets, drinking water, and a bear-proof dumpster are available, with two pull-through sites for easier access. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, welcoming RVs up to 40 feet. Additional Info: Season: Late May-Early September. First-come, first-served. Single sites $25/night, double sites $50/night, extra vehicle $7. After season: Open weather dependent, no fee, no toilets, no water. Area is wheelchair accessible.
