About this site

Weitas Guard Station is a remote, primitive camping area located in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests along Weitas Creek, approximately 45 miles northeast of Weippe, Idaho. The area surrounds a historic Forest Service guard station staffed with volunteers during part of the year. This is a primitive camping area with no developed facilities—no restrooms, potable water, or other amenities available. Campers must be self-sufficient and prepared for backcountry conditions. The site is accessed via Forest Service Roads 500/555, requiring high-clearance vehicles. Trail 20 follows Weitas Creek and provides access to nearly 30 miles of backcountry terrain, with portions open to OHV use. The area offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, horseback riding, mountain biking, OHV trail riding, and accessing the surrounding wilderness. Seasonal access: accessible when Forest Service Road 500/555 is open; winter access is limited or impossible due to snow and road conditions in this high-elevation remote area.
