War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground
About this site
War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground is the only campground in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve that sits away from the river, perched on a ridgetop near Backus Mountain. This primitive campground features 8 drive-in sites that accommodate tents or small RVs and campers under 25 feet in length. With no water, restrooms, or hookups, this is true backcountry-style camping for self-sufficient campers. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations and no fees. Each site can accommodate up to 8 people, 4 pets, 2 tents or 1 tent and 1 RV/camper, and 2 vehicles. Campers must stay within designated sites; camping in parking areas or non-designated sites is strictly prohibited. The 14-day per 28-day period limit applies. Fire rings are provided at each site, and campers may burn only dead wood found on the ground. Access is via Backus Mountain Road and a gravel road.
