About this site
Terlingua Abajo 1 (TA-1) is a primitive roadside backcountry campsite in Big Bend National Park, spread out along a small circular drive with separate parking/camping areas for each vehicle. The site accommodates a maximum of 3 vehicles (max length 25 feet), 12 people, no trailers, no horses. Located off Old Maverick Road, 3 miles from Santa Elena Canyon end or 10 miles from Maverick Entrance; 1.7-mile access road is extremely rough, requiring high clearance vehicles (4WD recommended after rain). No shade, sparse desert vegetation. Generators prohibited. Always check road conditions with ranger; impassable after heavy rain. Additional Info: Permits required via Panther Junction Visitor Center or Recreation.gov. Offers Chihuahuan Desert vistas and limestone cliff views.
