About this site

South Fowl Lake is a large, 1,586‑acre lake with 18.5 miles of shoreline that straddles the United States and Canada. Access to the 2 sites on this lake is via a boat ramp on Johnson Lake, portage to Little John Lake, then up the Royal River and into South Fowl Lake. Each site has a fire grate and latrine. When visiting, please remember to only use facilities that are provided for fires, tents, and waste; do not make additional fire rings, tent pads, or cat holes; and pack out all garbage. Nine people per site limit, group sites are available at some sites. Additional Info: South Fowl Lake Site 1 is a dispersed, first‑come, first‑served backcountry campsite within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Access is by boat and portage only; there is no vehicle access. A BWCAW permit is required for all visitors.
