Smithsonian Butte National Back Country Byway
About this site
Smithsonian Butte National Back Country Byway is a 9.25-mile scenic route between Rockville and Apple Valley, Utah, just south of Zion National Park. The byway travels through pinyon-juniper woodlands and sagebrush desert, offering spectacular views of Smithsonian Butte, Eagle Crags, Vermilion Cliffs, and Zion's sandstone pinnacles. Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM lands with a 0.5-mile buffer from either side of the byway itself. Camping is prohibited within town limits of Rockville and Grafton, and is not permitted until reaching the top of the butte. Additional dispersed camping is available on BLM lands throughout Gooseberry Mesa and along spur roads on Wire Mesa and Grafton Mesa (4WD recommended). The historic ghost town of Grafton is accessible via a 1.8-mile side trip.
