Shields River Dispersed Site
About this site
Shields River Dispersed Site is a primitive, free camping area in the West Crazy Mountains on the Yellowstone District of Custer Gallatin National Forest. The site features 6 first-come, first-served campsites accessible by vehicle (maximum 22 feet) located 24 miles northeast of Wilsall on Shields River Road. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with vault toilets available but no potable water or trash services. The site is open from June 16 through December 1, weather permitting. Fishing is excellent on the Shields River, and the surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. The road can be challenging when wet; visitors should call the ranger district for current road conditions before traveling.
