About this site

Shields River Dispersed Site is a primitive, free camping area in the West Crazy Mountains on the Yellowstone District of Custer Gallatin National Forest. The site features 6 first-come, first-served campsites accessible by vehicle (22-foot maximum length) located 24 miles northeast of Wilsall on Shields River Road. Open June 16 through December 1. Vault toilets are available; potable water is not. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash services. Road conditions can be challenging when wet; call the ranger district for current conditions before traveling. The site offers excellent fishing on the Shields River and opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing in the surrounding mountains.
