Sheep Camp
About this site
Sheep Camp is a backcountry campsite on the Chilkoot Trail in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Alaska. It is the last campground on the U.S. side of the trail before the trail summit and Chilkoot Pass. The site has long been a stopping place for travelers crossing Chilkoot Pass and was historically used by Alaska Natives for hundreds of years. During the Klondike Gold Rush era (ca. 1898), Sheep Camp was a substantial settlement with log buildings, hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops. Today it is an important backcountry stop where hikers rest before ascending Long Hill to the Scales and then over Chilkoot Pass. The campground is often fully booked during peak summer months.
