Priest Hole
About this site
Priest Hole Recreation Site is a BLM-managed area on the John Day River approximately 12 miles from Mitchell, Oregon. The site contains 14 drive-in campsites with fire rings and picnic tables, including one group site, arranged in a one-way loop. A walk-in dispersed camping area is designated in the northwest corner without fire rings or picnic tables. Camping is free and first-come-first-served. The site features a boat launch for access to the John Day Wild and Scenic River, day use areas with picnic tables, and two restrooms. No potable water, garbage services, or campsite amenities are available. Pets are allowed under owner control. Access is via gravel road requiring good ground clearance. The John Day River bans campfires annually from June 1 through October 15; when allowed, fires must be contained in provided fire rings at drive-in sites or raised fire pans in dispersed areas. The site is a local favorite for fishing and swimming and is near the Painted Hills.
