About this site

Owens River Road is just one of hundreds of forest roads that take you deep into the Inyo National Forest of California. This particular location offers free camping near Mammoth Lakes, CA. Inyo National Forest remains one of the most serene forests in the United States, with its vast acreage and tall old growth pines that can conceal your existence and keep you hidden from view. It's no wonder so many boondockers flock to Inyo National Forest every summer to escape the heat and the crowds. Additional Info: Dispersed camping is permitted along Owens River Road with numerous pullouts and small campsites on both sides of the road. The area features no amenities—no water, toilets, or services. Campers must be self-sufficient and pack in/pack out. A 14-day stay limit applies. The closest town with services is Mammoth Lakes, approximately 20 minutes away. Dispersed camping is prohibited once you reach Big Springs Campground further along the road. Temperatures range from 30°F in winter to 85°F in summer. Fallen trees and pine cones are available for campfires.
