Madden Peak Dispersed Area offers free dispersed camping in the San Juan National Forest, approximately 30 miles west of Durango and 30 miles east of Cortez, near Mesa Verde National Park. Multiple sites suitable for tents and RVs, including some big rig friendly spots, accessible via Forest Service Road 316 (Madden Peak Road). 14-day stay limit applies. Road is well-maintained gravel initially, becoming rutted higher up; high clearance recommended beyond first 4 miles. Fire rings at established sites; pack in/pack out; no amenities provided.
