Lost Horse Guard Station
About this site
Lost Horse Guard Station is a historic log cabin rental located 18 miles from Highway 93 in the Lost Horse Creek drainage on the west side of the Bitterroot Valley. Built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration, the cabin features two sets of full-sized bunk beds, a wood-burning stove for heat, and a propane cook stove. There is no running water, electricity, or trash service; guests must bring their own water and pack out all waste. The cabin is typically accessible by vehicle via Lost Horse Road 429 from Darby, Montana (approximately 25 miles). From January through March, access requires snowmobile or other over-snow vehicles via a 14-mile route that may not be recently groomed. The cabin sits within a glacial-carved canyon landscape featuring towering peaks, granite cliffs, alpine lakes, avalanche chutes, and cascading waterfalls, surrounded by mixed coniferous forest transitioning from ponderosa pine at lower elevations to lodgepole pine, subalpine fir, Engelmann spruce, and whitebark pine at higher elevations. Reservations are available year-round through Recreation.gov.
