Little Rock Lake
About this site
The Little Rock Lake Backcountry Campsite is one of the hardest sites to reach in Rocky Mountain National Park. The single site lies in a meadow on the north side of Little Rock Lake, the lowest of the eight Gorge Lakes on the west side of Forest Canyon. The approach to the campsite from Milner Pass requires hiking at least six miles. The off-trail route follows the Continental Divide to Mount Ida’s north slopes, and then traverses to a ridge and a steep descent down unstable talus slopes to the tiny lake. The Park Service recommends bringing crampons and an ice axe since the descent may be snow-covered. Allow five to eight hours to reach the campsite. Expect to gain 1,440 feet from Milner Pass and lose 1,920 feet when hiking from Milner Pass. The primitive site has no privy. Get water from the creek below the lake. Boil or treat water before use. The site is snow-free by mid-July. Recommended season(s): Mid-July to September. Additional Info: Party size is limited to 7 at individual sites. Contact the Wilderness Office (970-586-1242) for current conditions, regulations and requirements.
