About this site

Located near Decatur, TX, the US Forest Service-managed LBJ National Grassland is a popular area for free camping. This camping map was compiled based on our visit to the Grassland in November of 2023. We scoped out every boondocking site as well as noted the locations of paid campgrounds. We also noted which gates were kept locked and which dispersed camping areas were blocked off. Additional Info: The grasslands comprise over 20,250 acres and offer both dispersed and developed camping. Designated camping areas include Black Creek Lake (7 walk-in units, no drinking water), TADRA Point (trailhead facility with restrooms and parking), and Valley View Group Use Campground (available by reservation on weekends for $150). Most camping is free and first-come, first-served. Nearly 75 miles of multipurpose trails are available for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Maximum 14-day stay within any 30-day period. Gasoline-powered generators prohibited 10pm-6am.
