Imp Shelter
About this site
Imp Shelter is a backcountry shelter located on a spur trail off the Appalachian Trail in the Carter-Moriah range of White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire. The shelter provides overnight accommodations for hikers traversing the ridge between North Carter and Mount Moriah. The facility includes a closed shelter structure with a large sleeping shelf accommodating approximately 12 people, along with tent platforms for additional camping. A caretaker is stationed on-site during the summer season (Memorial Day through Columbus Day) to collect fees and assist visitors. When the caretaker is not present, campers use self-service cash boxes. The shelter was last rebuilt in 1980 and was the last native timber shelter constructed in the White Mountains. Access is via a 0.2-mile spur trail from the Carter-Moriah Trail. This backcountry site is ideal for experienced hikers and backpackers seeking a remote mountain experience. Campers must come prepared with their own water and supplies, as no potable water or restroom facilities are available on-site.
