Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area

Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area is a free, first-come, first-served BLM campground located 24 miles east of Austin, Nevada along US Highway 50 in the Big Smoky Valley at 6,500 feet elevation. The area features approximately 16-17 campsites that accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, each with a gravel parking spur, picnic table, fire ring, and BBQ pedestal. Some sites offer shade ramadas or tree cover. Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection, but there is no drinking water or hookups. The recreation area is known for its self-guided 0.5-mile interpretive trail with multiple petroglyph panels, sweeping views of the Toquima and Toiyabe mountain ranges, and excellent stargazing opportunities. Activities include hiking, photography, wildlife viewing, bird watching, mountain biking, and OHVing. The site is open year-round with a 14-day stay limit. No cell service is available.
