Hennepin Canal Lock 22 Campground is a Class C primitive campground located at Lock 22 on the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park near Sheffield, Illinois. The campground offers first-come, first-served camping with no reservations. Camping is allowed only in designated sites, not along the towpath or in the main complex area around the visitor center. The canal offers Class C (primitive camping without showers or electricity) for $8.00 per family per night, regardless of mode of camping (tent, camper, pop-up). Youth groups pay a $20.00 daily minimum, with each additional person $2.00 per night. Illinois senior citizens camp free Monday–Thursday; Friday–Sunday the fee is $8.00. Illinois disabled persons with a Class 2 or Class 2A card camp free Sunday–Saturday. Fees are collected in person by the Canal’s site security officer, who makes rounds to each campsite. Payment is by cash or check. There are no set check-in or check-out times. The campground has vault toilets and a water spigot, but no showers or hookups. Fires are allowed only in state-designated fire pits at the campgrounds. Additional Info: - The campground is located in a park-like setting southwest of the lift bridge at Lock 22. - The site has vehicular access and allows both tent and RV camping, but there are no dumping or pump-out stations. - The only drinking water on the entire canal is located at the main parking lot in front of the visitor center at the large shelter; campers are advised to bring their own water for camping trips.
