Glacier Spit Trailhead and Campsite is the primary access point for backpacking in Kachemak Bay State Park. Located across Kachemak Bay from Homer, Alaska, the site is accessible only by water taxi. The trailhead serves as the starting point for the Grewingk Glacier Trail, a popular 6.5-mile hike through mature spruce and cottonwood forest. Camping is available at the trailhead and at multiple backcountry locations including Grewingk Creek, Grewingk Glacier Lake, and Rusty's Lagoon. Privies are available at the trailhead. Water is available from glacial streams and creeks in the area. Additional Info: The site is part of Kachemak Bay State Park and requires permits for camping. Water taxi service from Homer costs approximately $80 per person round trip (as of 2022). The trail is well-maintained and suitable for various skill levels, with hiking times of 1.5-3 hours depending on destination.
