Gabaldon Horse Camp
About this site
Gabaldon Horse Camp is a primitive equestrian campground located at 9,400 feet elevation in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, situated amid spruce trees at the foot of Mount Baldy Wilderness. The campground is named after Juan Gabaldon, a retired Forest Service employee who dedicated his career to developing and maintaining trails in the area. This campground is exclusively for campers with horses or stock animals and offers approximately 5 campsites with corrals. The facility operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees. Amenities include vault toilets and picnic tables at each site. No potable water is available on-site; campers must bring their own water for both themselves and their animals, which can be hauled from the Big Lake area. The campground provides easy access to over 50 miles of equestrian trails and the Mount Baldy Wilderness trail system, making it an ideal base camp for multi-day horseback riding adventures. Located off State Road 273, just east of Phelps Trailhead near Colter Creek. The campground typically closes during winter months when snow makes the area inaccessible.
