Diablo Canyon Recreation Area offers free primitive camping on BLM-managed land near dramatic basalt cliffs popular for hiking and climbing. Access via a rough 7.5-mile dirt road (2WD capable) off Veterans Memorial Highway (599) onto Old Buckman Road. 14-day camping limit. Adjacent Santa Fe National Forest land also allows free camping closer to the Rio Grande.
