Devils River State Natural Area site 3
About this site
This primitive site was a little tough in May due to the heat as well as the little flies, so I only stayed two of the three nights. I’d recommend visiting in cooler months and bringing a hat with a face net just in case. Site 3 was too far from the water to walk, so you’d have to pack your things, drive, and park in the lot about 1/4 mile from the river. Overall though, the Devils River is gorgeous, obviously Dolan Falls is beautiful, but upriver is an amazing spring that gushes out of the rock wall as well as dinosaur tracks. Beware of poison ivy on the trail! Additional Info: Devils River State Natural Area is a remote, rugged 37,000-acre nature reserve in Val Verde County, Texas, featuring the spring-fed Devils River, Dolan Falls, and dinosaur tracks. River campsites like Site 3 require a $10 Devils River Access Permit (DRAP), are accessible only by high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, and involve a hike from the parking lot to the river. Pets are not allowed. The park is closed Tuesday through Thursday, with gate hours 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Monday.
