Chalk Basin is a remote area in the Owyhee Canyonlands featuring colorful lakebed sediments, rhyolite formations, layered sandstone, clay, welded tuff, chert, and limestone bluffs with Miocene mammal fossils. It overlooks the Owyhee Wild and Scenic River and lies within the Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Study Area managed by BLM. Accessible via rough jeep track or poor dirt road from Highway 95 near Rome, Oregon. Popular for day hikes like the Chalk Basin Loop (5 miles, 615 ft gain) and overnight backpacking trips.
