Carnarvon Lake Campground
About this site
Those interested in completing this difficult adventure should know that this trail includes a river crossing and some level 3 to 4 scrambling which may not be suitable for beginners. The trailhead for Carnarvon Lake is located at the Cat Creek Provincial Recreation Area. The first stretch of the trail is wide and easy with not much to see, and is also frequented by mountain bikers. Hikers may want to save some time by biking this section, up until one of the first scrambles. At around the two kilometre mark, you will need to cross the river. The water level may be as high as mid-thigh depending on the season, with the lowest levels occurring later in the summer. To cross safely, remember that the calmest and most shallow water will be where the riverbed is the widest, and you may want to look upstream for easier places to cross. After another eight kilometres of moderately difficult hiking up to the waterfall, you will reach the scrambling/chain section up the headwall before finally reaching the lake. There are a small number of primitive campsites available at the lake. There are often bears in this area, so campers will need to hang food and other items appropriately. Most campsites have makeshift fire pits. Be aware of any fire bans that may be in effect for the area before you venture out, but this information will be available at the trailhead.
