Bolar Mountain Recreation Area is a multi-loop campground complex on the northern end of Lake Moomaw, a 2,530-acre manmade lake along the Jackson River in George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. The area provides four campgrounds: Sugar Ridge, Campground 1, Campground 2, and Campground 3. Each campground features 'Prime' sites with lake views and/or direct access. Campground 2 is known for wooded, spacious sites with good privacy. The facility offers potable water, flush toilets, and showers throughout. Most electric hookup sites are located at Campground 1, followed by Campgrounds 2 and 3. RV waste dump stations are available at Campground 1 and Campground 2. Popular activities include boating, canoeing, water skiing, swimming, kayaking, and fishing for brown and rainbow trout, bass, and crappie. The area features 11 miles of hiking trails leading to Islands Overlook Spur and Grouse Point Overlook scenic vistas. Cell service is minimal to nonexistent. There is little to no cell service, so be ready to disconnect!
