About this site

Black Bear Campground is a small, quiet campground located along the banks of Skalkaho Creek in the Bitterroot National Forest, 16 miles south of Hamilton, Montana and 26 miles north of Darby, Montana. Adjacent to the Scenic Skalkaho Highway, the campground is approximately 8.5 miles from Skalkaho Falls, a popular scenic waterfall. The campground hosts 6 sites with picnic tables and fire rings, and can accommodate RVs or trailers up to 50 feet. No fees are required and all sites are first-come, first-served. No potable water is available and there is no garbage service, so pack it in/pack it out. A vault toilet is provided. Bears frequent the area and a Food Storage Order is in effect from March 1 through December 1 annually. Skalkaho Creek offers good fishing opportunities, particularly for Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep. The campground is accessible year-round until closed by snow, with winter accessibility not guaranteed. 16 day stay limit. Additional Info: FS Road 75, also known as the Skalkaho-Rye Road, is a popular scenic route easily accessible from Black Bear Campground. The nearby Centennial Grove Trail offers a short paved interpretive trail to learn about trees and plant life.
