Big Oaks Equestrian State Forest Campground
About this site
This rustic equestrian campground is nestled on Avery Lake and offers opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, boating and fishing. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from a hand-pump well. There is also a submersible well that requires a 2,500 watt generator. All sites have picket posts and site #10 has corrals for two horses. The campground is located 10 miles southwest of Atlanta via County Road 487 and Avery Lake Road. Sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations. From the campground, equestrians can access Big Oaks Equestrian Trails and many state forest roads that are open to horseback riding. This campground is maintained with the help of the Alpena County Horseman's Club. Additional Info: Overnight fees ($20 for most sites) and registration procedures are posted at the information kiosk. Camping is limited to a 15-day maximum stay. One camping unit and six people are allowed per site. Recreation Passport required for vehicle entry. 24 sites total. No electrical hookups.
