Bates State Park is a 131-acre state park in Grant County, Oregon, near Prairie City, featuring 28 primitive campsites for tents and self-contained RVs (plus 6 hiker/biker sites), vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, and trash service. The park offers hiking trails with interpretive panels on local logging history, overlooks of Bates Pond and the valley, picnicking, and is situated along the Middle Fork John Day River, Bridge Creek, and Clear Creek. Open year-round (weather permitting), first-come first-served, with poor cell service. Up to 50-foot vehicles. Pets allowed. Elevation 4,070 feet. Additional Info: Operated by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Universal access: 3 campsites accessible to campers with disabilities. Hiker/biker sites include electric plug-ins.
